Poems and letters of A. Clifford Hawes, [manuscript], 1899 Oct 19 and 1900 Sep 10.

The collection contains several manuscript poems "Intended for the Entrance to a City Park," "McKinley for me, McKinley 'twill be," "The Confectioner," and "The Tree" together with a typed poem "To a bunch of flowers," regarding a bouquet given to President Grant in New Bedford, Conn., in 1874." A poem "Spring sonnet" by M.S.M. is dedicated to Hawes. Letters, 1899 Oct 19 and 1900 Sep 10, to Wm. L. Sayer enclose his poems for publication in Sayer's newspaper "The Evening Standard." In an undated letter addressed to Mr. Editor Hawes says he has made a rule that any poetry submitted to the press which has not been made available in one month will be understood as unaccepted, and thus sent to other periodicals. He does this "for [his] own protection."
